W 65th Anniversary, Hiroshima, 1945. Read Pope John

and “structural sin” in reflecting on this sad anniversary.

W Go without meat today for 6 reasons: 1) Recognition of both personal and structural sin; 2)

Solidarity with people less fortunate than we,

both far and near; 3) Conserving environment,

viz., water and grain to feed farm animals; 4)

Less cholesterol in your bloodstream, viz., you

don’t need meat everyday! 5) Solidarity with

Jesus on Good Friday; 6) Catholic and proud of

it!! Impress your kids!!! In Belgium, they encourage

Meatless Thursdays as a consciousness

raiser for their kids. Catholics were doing

that on Fridays in days when it was not au courant.

Catholics were out of the loop. (Or were

we?)

Let us know when someone is in hospital and

would like a visit!

Always make sure that you keep in touch

every weekend with a Catholic community,

either here or elsewhere. Also, think of

the possibility of bringing your children

to daily Mass once or twice during the

week for a different experience of liturgy.

Then, go and do breakfast at the

deli immediately immediately after.

Think about St Patrick’s when planning for the future.

You are here but others aren’t.  Do what your parish team cannot do, viz., talk up among your friends and relatives the need to maintain Sunday Mass attendance, even during the summer. Bad example might be given to kids when the impression is made that you only go to church when there is school. TXjq

Registration for next year’s Religious Education Programs for Children will begin in a few weeks.  If your child is new to the program, please contact Diane or Allanna at 273-8226.  Email: stpatreled@optonline.net

Fund raising Update:

Thanx to all for their continued support of our ongoing efforts to pay down the remaining $107,000 debt for our Parish Center. If you have not completed your pledge, would you please consider doing so in 2009? Our community has many other capital projects and regular expenses to consider.  If you need some additional info, call Peter at 273 5276.

Collection: It really helps if you use envelopes or www.parishpay.

Thanx to all who gave.

IN THE PARA-OIKIA:

HAVE YOU, OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW, CONSIDERED  INQUIRING” INTO THE   CATHOLIC CHURCH?

If so, we offer a simple process (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) for unbaptized persons seeking to know more about the Church, baptized adults from another Christian tradition who would like to come into full communion with us, or baptized Catholics who have not been fully formed in the faith of our church and desire to complete the sacraments of Christian initiation (Eucharist and Confirmation). If you are interested or you know someone who is, speak to JQ or Diane.

IN THE PARA-OIKIA:

Every Thursday morning, our daily Mass community prays for peace in a special way.  In the Middle Ages, all fighting was to cease on Thursday in recognition of Jesus’ institution of the Eucharist in Holy Thursday.  Take home a white or green card from church to join us even if you cannot be here physically.

The Diocese urges us to remind you periodically to think about remembering St Patrick’s in estate planning.

PLEASE, TRY TO BE ON TIME A FEW MINUTES BEFORE MASS TO ALLOW YOU AND YOUR FAMILY A CHANCE TO RECOLLECT BEFORE WE HEAR GOD’S WORD IN THE SCRIPTURES EACH WEEKEND AS AN ACT OF COURTESY TO GOD AND THE COMMUNITY!! CONSISTENT LATENESS FOR MASS MIGHT BE SUBTLY SAYING THAT YOU DON’T NEED TO HEAR THE SCRIPTURES.THINK ABOUT IT.

COLLECTION: It’s franks and beans this week!!  Only 103 envelopes were used.  Thanx to all who gave.  Sadly, many feel that church attendance is only something we do when CCD is in session.  Not so!! God comes first, even on Summer Sundays.  Think about www.parishpay.com or 1866PARISH1.  We’ll survive!!

HEAR YE: As our parish has grown, the maintenance requirements of the parish have grown as well. Whose has not? We would like to hire a full-time maintenance person to handle cleaning and minor repairs.  Current weekly income is insufficient for our plan.  We estimate that we would need about $2 per person per week to allow us to move forward.  We realize that this may be difficult for some now.  A $2 increase per each person worshipping here would benefit the entire parish community. Thanx for all you do.

Friendly reminders:

Impress your kids.  Remind them that God comes first, even on summer Sundays.

There will be no Thursday afternoon classes next year in TPC. There will be classes for Grades K thru 5 on Monday and Wednesday afternoons only, as well as two sessions on Sunday morning for Grades K thru 8.  Grades 6,7, and 8 will be held only on Monday and Wednesday evenings.  Regisrations will go out shortly.  A big reason for the adjustment in schedule is the lack of parent-teachers during the week. Help Jesus to share the faith with the children of the community!!!

Hear ye!! We salute outgoing Trustees, Donna Myers and Vincent Greco. Theresa Perna and Peter Ryan will take up their mantle, effective April 1. Thanx to all!!

Let us know if you would like a visit if in hospital.  We will be glad to go.

Commandment # 11:

Thou shalt not twitter nor text in  Church!!

NB……We honor the ancient custom of the church and suspend celebrations of the Sacrament of Baptism from Ash Wednesday until the Easter Vigil.  Our first scheduled baptisms in the 50 days of Easter will be on Saturday, April 18.  In addition, recall that the baptismal catechesis for new parents and parents to be will be held on Saturday morning, Jan 31, at 10.30AM, in Wallace Hall.  Whether one’s child has been baptized already or not, it is hoped that you will, indeed, join us for this preparatory session.

Collection: Fund Raising update:

A mailing was sent to all parishioners this week containing an update to pay down the remaining mortgage obligations for the Parish Center. Also, a request was made to families and individuals to make a pledge in 2008 of $200 per annum for 5 years.  Please consider a pledge in 2008 (payments may begin in 2009 or at your convenience) and the many benefits to the community of our Parish Center.  Retiring the mortgage will enable us to focus attention of necessary capital projects and ensure that we have sufficient reserves for Parish Center maintenance. As ever, thanx!!  If you didn’t receive the mailing, call the rectory.

A Blessed 2009AD to all!!!!!!

Special notice: We are conscious of the adverse weather conditions during the winter.  Please, exercise prudence when a winter storm is on progress. The Mass will be celebrated, but we don’t want anyone getting hurt either getting here or on our church campus.  Call the rectory when in doubt.  Think about Parishpay or use of church envelopes.  It helps you and us both!! Tx to all!!

TX: Many Thanx to the Ballirano Family for their giving the Advent Wreath in our Sanctuary in memory of former housekeeper, +Ellen McGee. May she rest in peace!

Once again: If you or someone in your family are planning a stay at Northern Westchester or White Plains Hospitals, and would like a visit, call the rectory to let us know.

In the world: While away, log on to our parish website www.stpatrickinarmonk.org to get a parish update.  In addition, we have links, including the Vatican and US Catholic Conference, as well as daily Scriptural readings.

If you have area cable, tune into Ch 103 for Euronews or 104 for BBC News to find out what people in the rest of the world think is newsworthy.  Listen to what others think about what is important.

Special NOTICES:

We are doing well, bit in an attempt to save paper and postage, we need to remove names from our mailing list of folks who have asked for envelopes and then, don’t use them or have moved. If you do receive and use envelopes, of course, there will be no need.  Think about the possibility of Parishpay as a time saver and energy saver. Call Mary or Cathy for details.

We ask all to clean up the church at the end of the Mass that you attend by taking home or re-placing at the vestibules bulletins.  Please also, Martha asks that you put the hymn books back in the racks!! Thanx to all.

If you are an adult without children and are consistently late for the Liturgy of the Word (aka the start of Mass), think about what it says about your attitude to the Word of God and your fellow worshippers!!

Hear ye!!!

According to the ancient custom of the church, we do not do baptisms during Lent, because Lent was meant to be a 40 day period of preparation for adults to be baptized at Easter.  We will plan on Easter baptisms beginning on Saturday, March 29!!

For several reasons, we ask the community to refrain from bringing pets onto our church campus at any time! You can figure out a few of the reasons why!!

Hear Ye: Hear Ye:

Our two wonderful stalwarts, Sr Mary Rose Golden and Sr Barbara Heil, were recently honored by the Archdiocese of NY for years of service here at St Patrick’s with the Catechetical Office Medal of Honor, each for 25 years of commitment to Total Parish Catechesis in the religious education of our communion students and their families.  We salute these two wonderful ladies and thank God for their gracing us with their presence and wisdom and Divine Compassion!!

Fundraising update:

Thanx to the many families and individuals who have supported the Phase II effort of the Parish Center fundraising efforts.  Pledges and gifts totaling $562,000 are helping us near our goal of $800,000. This fundraising effort became necessary as a result of cost overruns, some pledges from our initial campaign remaining unfulfilled and the need for an endowment to ensure future maintenance needs are met on the Parish Center.

We are pleased to report that the donor wall which honors the generosity of so many here at St Patrick’s has been installed and names will continue to be added as pledges are fulfilled. If you have not had the opportunity to learn about the campaign, contact Fr Quinn.  We are near our goal and want to ensure that the Parish Center remains an important part of the St Patrick’s experience for generations to come.  Please join us. Thanx to all!!

Cyo:

Any child in grades 3-8 AND is registered in St Patrick’s CCD, a CCD Program in another parish or attends a Catholic grammar school is eligible.  The CYO season begins in later October and ends in mid-February.

If there is interest, there will also be a 9/10 grade boys and 9/10 grade girls team.

You may also register by email by contacting Frank Golden at fgolden@optonline.net.

FRIENDLY REMINDERS:

Several folks ask that we remind you that we have a children’s chapel during Masses on Sunday.  Some  express chagrin that the parents of energetic tots not to take advantage  of the opportunity when distractions abound for those around them.

We know it is beautiful out in the summer. Please, try to remain until the priest leaves the sanctuary each Sunday.

When you are vacationing and want to know what is going down at home and/or you just want to log on and catch up, check out our website www.stpatrickinarmonk.org for all the news and updates!!

Collections:

FYI: Due to IRS rule changes, you will need a cancelled check or a letter from the rectory to deduct donations made to St Patrick’s on your 2008 tax return.  This new requirement is an excellent reason to use our envelope or Parish Pay System. Parish Pay results in an annual acknowledgment sent to you to substantiate your generous donations to us for IRS purposes.

                              A Seasonal Thought

(Everyday is Thanksgiving Day for a Catholic)

                        Thanksgiving belongs to prayer.

TXG is the true inward acknowledgement

enabling us to rejoice in the Lord

                                and behave accordingly

in our dealings with one another.

In the parish:

RCIA  -- Anyone interested in augmenting his or her connection with the Catholic Community here at St Patrick’s by becoming Catholic and/or reception of Eucharist and/or Confirmation, think about joining our Rite of Christian Initation for Adults Program which re-opens in the fall.  Speak to JQ for further info.  Old-timers, welcome back as well.

Special reminder:

Several have expressed chagrin at the way that handicapped parking spaces are used.  Don’t use such a space without displaying a handicap permit.  Don’t park over the lines.  If you need to avail of handicapped spaces, please come at a reasonable time for Mass. We all can help!

A thought:

The life and words of Jesus and the teachings of the Church call us to serve those in need and to work actively for social and economic justice.  As a community of Catholic believers, we know that our faith is tested by the quality of justice among us, that we best measure our life together by how well the poor and the vulnerable are treated. USCCB, Economic Justice for All, 1986.

“Our Faith is not just a weekend obligation, a mystery to be celebrated around an altar on Sunday.  It is a pervasive reality to be practiced every day in homes, offices, factories, schools and businesses across our land. We cannot separate what we believe from how we act in the marketplace and the broader community, for this is where we make our primary contribution to the pursuit of economic justice.”  USCCB, Economic Justice for All, 1986.

aNOTHER thought, 20 years later

Does our economic system place more emphasis on maximizing profits than on meeting human needs and fostering human dignity? Does our economy distribute its benefits equitably or does it concentrate power and resources in the hands of a few? Does it promote excessive materialism and individualism? Does it adequately protect the environment and the nation’s natural resources? Does it direct too many scarce resources to military purposes? (USCCB, Economic Justice for All (1986)

In the area:

As ever, St Patrick’s parishioners outdid themselves with the collection of 38 backpacks of school supplies for the children of the Andres Home in North Yonkers.  Tx to Val & Rosemary for their coordination.  Are we surprised?

Former pastor, +Msgr Walter Schroeder, went to heaven on Wednesday, June 21, after a brief illness.  Funeral Masses were offered on Wednesday evening, at 7.30PM, on July 5 at Our Lady of Solace Church, Bronx NY as well as Thursday morning, at 10.30AM, at St Joseph’s Church, Middletown NY. May the angels lead him into paradise!!

…AND DON’T MISS OUR Parish notes:

Please consider donating your confirmation gowns back to the Religious Education Program.  You can leave them in a box outside the Rel Ed Office.  This will save money that we can use to help your children in other ways.

Please consider donating used computer flat panel monitors or processors, less than 2 years old.  Call Mary.

Regisration for our fall programs continues this weekend.  First come, first served.

Food Pantry in P-ville:

Our parish is a member of the Interfaith Food Pantry in Pleasantville.  Donations of non-perishable food may be left in the vestibule at any time.  Needed now: juice, jelly, canned fruits and vegetables.

MSGR GELSOMINO!!!!  We joyfully announce that Fr Peter Gelsomino, an integral part of our parish community for 17 years, has been named a Chamberlain to Pope Benedict XVI.

Go for it, Msgr(!!) Gelso!!!!

Remember that our church is open daily from 7am – 6pm. Stop in and cool your brain for 20 minutes.  Meister Eckhardt said that God’s voice is heard most loudly in silence, solitude and in slowing down.

                                                            RCIA re-visited:

Come this fall, we will begin a new session of RCIA (Rite of Christian Initation for Adults) as a proven way to bring adults into deeper communion with our Church.  This program is designed for those adults who seek baptism and/or confirmation, fuller communion with the Catholic Church, re-introduction to Catholicism after an alienation or for general Catholic development.  Old timers, welcomed back. If you have any questions, speak to JQ at Mass.
